In Kabbalu village, the famous Shri Kabbalamma Temple is a Hindu temple to a goddess. Its main goddess is Shri Kabbalamma, an influential Hindu religious figure. This temple is in a small village that is hard to get to. It could have been better known in that area. This is only now becoming more critical. Story Of Kabbalamma
It is said that Kabbali married a poor farmer named Rangappanna. Their love was vibrant, even though they were poor. Kabbali felt terrible that she didn’t have any kids. When she looked sad one day, her husband asked her, “What’s wrong?” She said it’s been a long time since she saw her younger sister and her kids. The king had a lot of love for Bisilamma, her younger sister, and her kids.
The king told her she could visit her sister and her kids in another village. Kabbali is happy to see her sister, but she’s also upset that they don’t have any money to buy anything and can’t see her without anything. She looks for it and then finds it at home.
She provides it to her husband and tells him to bring a cart full of things. “How can I bring a cart full of stuff for three Annas?” he asks with a laugh. She asks her husband what he would do if she came home with a lot of stuff. He says he’ll take the test and stand in front of her house like a Garudagamba (an Indian word for pillar).
Since this wasn’t a big deal, she filled a cart with things at the “center” (market). Then she’s excited and runs to her husband to call him and show him she has a cart full of things. The husband says he will stand in show of her home like a pillar, just like he said he would.
He tells Kabbali, “Tomorrow, people will talk about how Kabbali’s husband broke the promise, and he wouldn’t like that,” but she begs him not to do it because it’s just for fun. He then turns into a column and stands in front of her house. Kabbalists believe that all of these things happened because God wanted them to.
After a few days, she gets some treats and sees her sister. In the village next door, her sister Bisilamma sits with a neighbor simultaneously. When Kabbali’s neighbor sees her leave, she takes her child and runs back to her house, telling Bislama to keep her kids from her sister because she will be jealous.
Right away, Bisilamma grabbed her kids who were playing and put each one under a bamboo basket, telling them to come out when she called. The king saw Bisilamma carry her children into the house. Kabbali asked her sister to call her kids when she got home.
Bisilamma says her kids are no longer at home because they left. Kabbali asked Bisilamma about her husband. She says she had to go with her husband to the market for work. Kabbali tells her to show at least one child, but Bisilamma won’t move.
He asks, “What was under that?” when she sees the basket on its back. Bibi says that there was only a stone under the basket. Kabbali gets mad and says, “Let Stones be under the basket.” As soon as she says it, the kids will turn into rocks. As Bisilamma cries and falls at Kabbali’s feet, she begs her to forgive her. “Nothing can change now,” says Kabbalah.
After escaping all the trouble, one son greets his mother (Big Aunty). Kabbali hugs him and blesses him. He tells him that from now on, he is his mother’s only son and that he needs to see his doddamma (Big Aunty) Kabbalamma once a year to participate in a festival called “Sidi Jabba.” During the Sidi Habba festival, people run over wood that has been burned and turned into coal as a sign of rake. This is done to keep ghosts and evil eyes away.
Temple Architecture
If you walk into the temple, the high mandapa of the shrine stands out against the rocky dome. It looks like a white obelisk. The temple has walls and an arch on all four sides. Built in the Dravidian style, the most exciting parts of this temple are the gopurams and the mandapa with columns.
The temple’s main shrine is a statue of the primary god. It also contains a sculpture of a horse named Nandi and a small wooden chariot called a rath. In front of the temple, a large area can be used for events. Inside the temple, detailed stone carvings of many gods and stories from mythology line the entrance to the mandapas.
Temple Festivals & Rituals
The Kabbalamma Jatre is the most important event at the Shri Kabbalamma Temple. Many people, mainly from the nearby area, celebrate it with a lot of noise and show. During this festival, the god is placed on a chariot or rath and dragged to their home via the village in a parade. They all want to be on the pulling team because they think it will help them.
This resident bull, Basaveshwara, is part of an exciting ceremony. People who swear to give the bull something must sleep on the ground and let it walk over them. Kids as young as two must lie down in front of the bull. Devotees tie bundles of currency notes to the bull’s horns as gifts or to show appreciation for their wishes coming true.
